Ear wax removal is the process of clearing excess or hardened wax from the ear canal to help improve comfort, reduce blockage, and support overall ear health. Ear wax itself is normal and plays an important role in protecting the ear. It traps dust, debris, and bacteria while keeping the delicate skin of the ear canal moisturised. In most cases, the ear naturally cleans itself as wax moves gradually outward. However, sometimes wax can build up, become firm, or sit too deeply in the canal, leading to symptoms such as reduced hearing, a feeling of fullness, mild discomfort, or occasional itchiness. That’s when ear wax removal becomes helpful.

The process often begins with softening the wax, which makes it easier and safer to remove. Many people use olive oil, ear-softening drops, or a similar gentle solution that can help break down the wax over a few days. Softening helps the wax move naturally or prepares it for further cleaning techniques if needed.

A common method recommended by professionals is ear irrigation, in which warm water is gently rinsed through the ear canal using specialised equipment. This helps flush out softened wax without applying too much pressure. The water loosens the buildup and carries it out of the ear safely. Another approach used in clinics is microsuction, where a trained specialist uses a small suction device to carefully remove wax under direct visual guidance. This can be particularly helpful for people with sensitive ears or those who cannot use water-based methods.
